This week (Week 35) I find myself thinking about how easy it is to go through a whole day running on fumes spiritually without even noticing it. We fill our minds with news, notifications, and noise from sunup to sundown, and then wonder why we feel foggy, anxious, or spiritually flat by the time our head hits the pillow. There’s a reason our year has centered on renewing the mind, because a mind left to itself will default to worry, comparison, and drift every single time. But God never leaves us to figure this out alone. He’s given us something steady to walk by, something that actually lights up the next step even when the whole path ahead feels dark. This week’s focus gets right at the heart of that, so grab your coffee, find a quiet corner, and let’s dig in together.

From the Mouth of God: Trusting, Reading, and Applying the Bible by Sinclair Ferguson
A man of faith should read From the Mouth of God because it rebuilds confidence in Scripture from the ground up, at a time when many men absorb doubts about the Bible’s reliability without ever examining the case for its trustworthiness. Ferguson shows that Scripture is not a human construction dressed up in religious language but God’s own address to his people—verbal, historical, and centered on Christ—which gives a man’s devotional life and leadership a settled foundation rather than a shaky one. For a man responsible for discipling others, that settled confidence matters: he cannot lead others into trust he does not possess himself.
The book’s real strength for such a reader is its refusal to separate right reading from right living. Ferguson insists that Bible study isn’t a technique to master but a means by which God himself works transformation in the reader, echoing Paul’s language that the Word “is at work in you believers”. That reframes personal Bible reading away from checklist religion and toward genuine spiritual formation—exactly the posture a man wants to model for his family, his men’s group, or those he mentors.
Practically, the book equips a man with real interpretive skill: understanding genre, context, and the Bible’s Christ-centered storyline, then applying it through the framework of doctrine, correction, and training in righteousness. Chapter 10’s meditation on the parable of the soils presses the reader to examine his own heart’s receptivity, not just his technique. Chapter 11’s concrete habits—reading whole books, following a yearly plan, studying core books like Romans and John deeply—give practical structure for sustained growth. In short, this book strengthens both conviction and competence, making it ideal preparation for a man called to teach, lead, or simply walk faithfully with an open Bible.
