Real Strength, Real Wisdom: What Men Can Learn from God’s “Foolish Things”

The post explores the contrast between worldly and divine wisdom, emphasizing that true strength lies in humility, faith, and service to others. It advocates for men to seek God’s wisdom through prayer, scripture, and community, challenging them to check their motives and prioritize God over personal achievements.

What Makes a Man Wise?

If you ask most men what it means to be wise or strong, you’ll hear answers about success, confidence, or always having it together. We’re told to be self-reliant, to climb the ladder, to never show weakness. But what if God’s definition of wisdom and strength is completely different-and far better?

The Apostle Paul flips the script in 1 Corinthians 1:27-31:

“God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong… so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”

Let’s unpack what that means for us as men today.

God’s “Foolish Things”: The Strength of Humility

God isn’t impressed by our resumes, our bank accounts, or our ability to win arguments. He delights in using what the world sees as foolish or weak – simple faith, humility, and even our failures – to accomplish His greatest work.

Modern Examples of God’s “Foolish Things”

  • Ordinary Men: You don’t need a big title, a corner office, or a perfect past. God uses everyday guys who are willing to trust Him and serve others.
  • Simple Faith: In a world that prizes skepticism and complexity, God honors men who take Him at His word, even when it’s not popular.
  • Serving Others: While the world says, “Look out for number one,” God calls us to put others first – at home, at work, and in our communities.
  • Owning Weakness: Admitting you don’t have it all together isn’t failure – it’s the first step to real strength and growth.

Spotting False Wisdom in Ourselves

James 3:14-16 warns us that “wisdom” rooted in jealousy or selfish ambition leads to conflict and chaos, not peace and growth. As men, we need to ask ourselves tough questions:

  • Am I motivated by a need to be noticed, to win, or to have control?
  • Do I secretly resent others’ success?
  • Are my actions building others up, or causing division and strife?

If your “wisdom” is making you proud, divisive, or power-hungry, it’s time for a reset.

Cultivating Real, Godly Wisdom

So how do we get the kind of wisdom that lasts and actually makes us better men?

1. Ask God for Wisdom

James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach.” Make it a habit to pray for wisdom – daily.

2. Get Into God’s Word

Spend time in Scripture. Let God’s truth shape your decisions, your relationships, and your outlook.

3. Practice Humility

Real wisdom is marked by humility, not bravado. Be willing to serve, listen, and admit when you’re wrong.

4. Seek Wise Brothers

Don’t go it alone. Surround yourself with men who will challenge you to grow in faith and character.

5. Check Your Motives

Ask God to reveal if pride or selfish ambition is driving you. Be honest with yourself and with Him.

The Only Boast Worth Having

At the end of the day, the only thing worth boasting about isn’t your success, your strength, or your smarts – it’s what God has done for you in Christ.

“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:31)

God’s wisdom turns the world’s values upside down. He’s looking for men who are willing to trust Him, serve others, and admit their need for His strength. That’s the kind of man who leaves a legacy that matters.

Ready to trade in the world’s wisdom for God’s? Start today. Ask for His wisdom, get into His Word, and let Him use you – weakness and all – for something greater than yourself.

If this encouraged you, share it with a friend or your men’s group. Let’s build each other up in the wisdom that truly matters.
